A SUMMER IN MONTOLIEU: THIERRY GENAY EXHIBITS HIS PHOTOGRAPHS AT THE MANUFACTURE ROYALE

In collaboration with the OAK Gallery, photographer Thierry Genay adorns the walls of this Building steeped in history with a selection of still lifes. A new exhibition to discover until September 30, 2023.

A timeless place that resonates in harmony with the photographic work of Thierry Genay in this village overlooking the gorges of the Alzeau and the Dure, perched on the foothills of the Montagne Noire in the middle of the vineyards of Cabardès. Deliciously marrying the richness of the textures and the radicality of the compositions, the photographer reverses the realistic perception of the Still Life by substituting his lens for the brushes of the Masters of Flemish painting of the eighteenth century. These exceptional contemporary works were chosen by Marieke and Bart de Jonge for this first hanging on the walls of their venerable Royal Cloth Factory , which they have been passionately restoring for nearly 20 years to welcome their guests from all over the world.

The building of the Royal Manufacture was built from 1739, on mills of thesixteenth century. It is bordered by the Dure River offering energy for looms. The high-quality sheets produced at the Manufacture were intended for export, via Marseille, towards the Levant (Constantinople, Aleppo …). Industrial activity was largely carried out in the workshops upstream of the building on the river, the latter housing the owner of the farm and used to store sheets.

The building, which became the Manufacture Royale under Louis XV, is listed as a historical monument, partly because of the good conservation of elements such as the majestic marble staircase in the Louis XIII style, the period joinery and more generally the classical balance of both interior and exterior architecture.

Located 20 minutes from the medieval city of Carcassonne, Montolieu (Mount of Olives in Occitan) is also a Village of the Book and Arts with about fifteen booksellers and a Museum of Arts and Crafts of the Book.
